Turtles make great pets, but it’s important to provide them with proper care to keep them happy and healthy. Here are some tips for taking care of your turtle:
Housing: House your turtle in the largest possible enclosure, preferably a large glass aquarium. The enclosure’s volume should be at least 10 US gallons per 1 inch of your turtle’s shell length1. The tank should also have a secure cover to prevent your turtle from escaping.
Substrate: Cover the bottom of the tank with peat moss or soil, mixed together with equal parts of wood chips or sand. Avoid using gravel as your turtle could eat the small rocks and choke.
Basking area: Create a basking area for your turtle by building up smooth, wide river rocks or driftwood onto an elevated side of the bedding1. This side of the tank should stay dry and rise up out of the water1. You can also provide a hiding box in the basking area for your turtle to hide in.
Water: Fill the tank with non-chlorinated water deep enough for your turtle to swim in. The water’s depth should be at least twice the turtle’s length1. Change 25% of the tank water every week and remove droppings from the tank every day.
